The Mercure Castle Hotel is situated in a great position in the centre of Windsor. The hotel is only minutes away from Windsor Castle and it is possible to watch the Changing of the Guard from the relaxed surroundings of the Pennington Lounge. Windsor Castle is still a royal residence and tours around the castle and state apartments are very popular with visitors to Windsor. Windsor is also famous as the home of Eton College, the prestigious and historic public boys school. Guided tours, booked through the college, can be arranged for those interested in exploring Eton in a little more detail. Eton and the centre of Windsor are separated by the River Thames and during the summer boat trips down the Thames are a great way to spend an afternoon.
Moving slightly outside the town centre there are several day trips within easy driving distance. Families are spoilt for choice with no less than three theme parks in the surrounding area. Legoland Windsor is a 10minute journey from the Castle Hotel and is perfect for families with younger children, containing gentle Lego-themed rides and fun activities. Slightly further away is Thorpe Park which lies at the other end of the scale, being full of rollercoasters and thrilling rides for the more adventurous visitor. Furthest out, roughly 45 minutes away, is Chessington World of Adventures & Zoo, which has a pleasing mix of attractions to suit both young and old.
With regards to sporting pursuits, Windsor has a great horseracing heritage. Royal Windsor Racecourse sits on the outskirts of the town and has a great programme of meetings throughout the year. Alternatively, Ascot Racecourse is just south of Windsor.
